'Laughter is no enemy to learning.' Walt Disney
On the contrary: Neuroscience has shown that humor activates your brain's dopamine production. This stimulates your motivation to achieve a learning goal. It enables you to pay better attention to information and to retain what you have learned. Humor also fosters a sense of community. Difficult topics will seem less intimidating and thus more memorable.
While trying to teach something to other people, use well-planned, appropriate and contextual humor. Be authentic and don't try to play a role. This ensures an enjoyable and more sustainable learning experience. Humor is best acommodated between instruction and repetition.
When was the last time you laughed while learning?
